Many people, including those with dementia and brain injury, have difficulty with medication management. There are many medication apps available to help that go far beyond just simple reminders. These innovative tools significantly improve adherence, reduce medication errors, enhance patient safety with crucial drug interaction warnings, and boost patient engagement by empowering users to take control of their health.

Apps like Medisafe, Dosecast, and others have been studied for their effectiveness, showcasing diverse features such as location-based reminders, refill reminders, alerts, and texts to friends and relatives to improve adherence, and more.

I have personally used some of these apps and have recommended them to my past clients and family members. One of my favorite features is the alerts and texts to friends and family when meds are not taken on time. This can really give peace of mind to caregivers and increase independence for the user. The picture shows that my husband, Dennis, is listed as one of my “Medfriends”. When I do not take my meds on time, he receives a notification on his phone.  Works like a charm-unless, of course, I just want to get a phone call from my husband.

If you or someone you know is seeking greater independence and peace of mind through medication management, resources are available. Connect with your nearest Assistive Technology Act Program to explore and try assistive technology for medication management, including apps, locked medication dispensers, and more!
