Preliminary FAQs on Medicare SLP Private Practice

Effective July 1, 2009, private practice speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will be permitted to enroll in the Medicare program and treat Medicare beneficiaries. To assist SLPs interested in this opportunity, ASHA has developed preliminary information to address basic questions at

Additional resources under the Billing and Reimbursement section of ASHA's Web site will soon be added specifically related to Medicare SLP private practice and updated throughout the year.

ASHA is currently working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop the regulations and policies related to SLP Medicare private practice, including setting a date by which SLPs can begin enrolling into the Medicare program. For questions related to Medicare SLP private practice, please contact reimbursement@asha.org.
